Child Death Overview Panel
The Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP) is responsible for reviewing information on deaths of all children normally resident in Kent on behalf of the KSCB. It collects and analyses information about each death with a view to identifying:
- Any case giving rise to the need for a serious case review
- Any matter of concern affecting the safety and welfare of children in Kent
- Any wider public health or safety concerns arising from a particular death or pattern of deaths
- Any patterns or trends in the local data (and reporting these to KSCB)
CDOP will also ensure that there is a coordinated response from all partners to unexpected deaths.
In reviewing child deaths, CDOP utilises information available from those who were involved in the care of the child both before and immediately after the death and other sources such as the Coroner. It assesses the appropriateness of the professionals' response to each death, their involvement before the death, and relevant environmental, cultural, social and health aspects to ensure a thorough consideration of how such deaths might be prevented in the future.
